Troubleshooting Sound Issues in EEGer (No Reward Sounds, "No Alert Device")

When experiencing sound issues in EEGer, there are three main areas to troubleshoot: Speakers, Windows Settings, and EEGer itself. Please complete the steps below in order to isolate and resolve the issue.

EEGer has a built-in utility we can use to test sound problems.

  1. Navigate to Help>Run Tech Support Menu from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen.
  2. A new window will appear with a variety of options. On the left-side column, click Test Sound (this computer) and select Reward Sound. This should play the default Reward sound from within EEGer.
  3. Press Done (Exit) when finished testing to return to EEGer's main screen.

If sound is heard from the Tech Support Menu, EEGer can reach the speaker. This indicates that there is an issue during the session.

For the steps below, begin a replay session using a game where reward sounds are enabled, such as Highway or Mazes.

  1. Press the V key during the session to see EEGer's volume control menu. Use the arrow keys to make adjustments if needed.
  2. Begin the session using F5, then press F11 to automatically adjust the thresholds. This should produce rewards sounds if enabled.

If sound is not heard from the Tech Support Menu, EEGer was not able to reach the speaker. This means that adjustments will need to be made to the Windows Settings.

  1. If connected to an external display using an HDMI cable, follow these steps.
  2. If using external speakers, ensure they are properly connected to the computer and turned on. If using a Bluetooth device, ensure that it is paired successfully.
  3. Check that the volume in Windows is not muted or set too quietly. This can be checked by clicking the speaker icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner by default, on the taskbar).
  4. Additionally, verify that the correct output device is being used by Windows. Click the speaker icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner by default, on the taskbar) and ensure that the text above the volume bar is for the correct output device. In most cases, this should say something like Speakers.
  5. Once these adjustments have been made, navigate back to the Tech Support Menu within EEGer and test the sound again. If the sound plays successfully, the issue has been resolved.
